Private Shibari Workshops

Rope as a practice of contact

Private workshops shaped by years of practice in Japan, artistic collaboration, and direct work with clients. An original methodology with philosophical and cultural depth, taught without mystery: structured enough to transmit, open enough to become your own.

Who this is for

Your own rope journey

Whether you are an artist exploring rope as a material or performance tool, a bodyworker or therapist bringing rope into your existing practice, or someone seeking more presence and intimacy in your personal life — these workshops are shaped around you.

Available for solo participants, couples, small groups, and international travelers visiting Tokyo. No fixed starting point. The work begins where you are, and together we find the right format.

Workshop and session

Learning and direct experience

For those who would like to experience rope as well as learn, a combined workshop and session format is available. A day that moves between understanding and direct experience — theory, practice, and the session itself. Available for individuals and couples by inquiry.

Continuous track

Long-term development

For those looking to develop their practice over time, a continuous track is available. This selective format is built around long-term students, beginning with a consultation, an initial workshop, and a mutual commitment to ongoing work together. Places are limited.

Approach

Tradition, explained

Most rope education focuses on repeating patterns without explaining how they work. Other methods try to solve this by focusing on flow and communication alone, leaving aside the embodied knowledge carried by the patterns.

Patterns exist for a reason — they are proven solutions to common problems, transmitted through tradition. In this workshop, they are explained in a way that makes them easier to understand and use, so you can stop thinking about rope and focus on the person in front of you.

What we cover

Four areas of practice

Each workshop is built around one or more of the following areas, selected according to your background and what you are looking for.

Philosophy and cultural roots

Rope in Japan carries millennia of symbolic and spiritual meaning — from Jomon pottery and Dogu figures to Shinto ritual, Buddhist thought, and the idea of mushin, tying with an empty mind. This area explores those roots and how they continue to shape the practice today.

Examples: Philosophical fundamentals, Japanese cultural context, traditional Japanese hemp

Communication

Rope between two people carries a constant flow of contact — through touch, breath, tension, movement, and sound. This area explores how to work with each of these channels with intention, so that the session becomes more connected, responsive, and alive.

Examples: Communication fundamentals, incorporating sound, working with breath, body-led approach

Patterns and technique

Traditional rope patterns, studied not as sequences to memorize but as solutions to understand. How to tie with confidence, precision, and care — and how to apply those mechanics in practice.

Examples: Gote, futomomo, hip harness, body harness, semi-suspensions

Expression and improvisation

For those ready to move beyond structure — how to develop a personal practice, work with materials and objects, and let the session become more body-led, expressive, and open.

Examples: Freeflow, tying with fabrics, tying objects, tying structures
